(October 8, 2004) - Are you among the few dozen people who conscientiously answered our knotty question: "How would you rate the science coverage in your media?" Here are the results:

  • 47% of respondents — those whose colleagues at work think genomes are migratory birds (!) — rated science coverage in their media as average while 41% consider it good (probably Space Shuttle fans!).

  • Only 12% described science coverage in their media as excellent. And they had no problem admitting that reading Stephen Hawking’s books is their favourite pastime (!).

  • Comforting: no one dared rate the science coverage in their media as pathetic.

The journalists who responded to our survey come from as far away as Japan, Sudan, Tanzania, Nepal and Russia. Some are employees, others lifelong freelancers. All media are represented and the topics covered vary depending on national concerns. Finally, some think science coverage stands to gain by becoming sexier…

Note: This little survey was in no way intended to be SCIENTIFIC!!!
